Ray Chapman

Raymond Johnson Chapman (January 15, 1891 – August 17, 1920) played shortstop for the Cleveland Indians throughout his major league career, which began in 1912 when the club was still known as the Naps. He led the American League in runs scored and walks in 1918 and ranks sixth on the all-time list for sacrifice hits, holding the single-season record with 67 in 1917. Chapman died on August 17, 1920, after being struck in the head by a pitch from Carl Mays, making him the only player to die directly from an injury sustained during a Major League Baseball game.
