The Philadelphia Eagles selected him 18th overall in the 1963 NFL Draft, and he spent one season in Philadelphia before joining the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1964. After two years at left defensive tackle, Mansfield moved to center and held the starting position for a decade, from 1966 through 1976.
