Dossier

Raymond Tucker Chester, an American professional football tight end, was born June 28, 1948. After graduating from Douglass High School in Baltimore, Maryland, he played college football at Morgan State College, the city's historically Black university, now Morgan State University. He was a member of its undefeated 1967 team and its 8-1 1968 squad, scoring the Bears' only touchdown in their 1968 victory over Grambling State University at Yankee Stadium.

Chester was selected 24th overall in the first round of the 1970 NFL draft, beginning his professional career with the Oakland Raiders. As a rookie he caught seven touchdown passes and gained over five hundred receiving yards, earning Rookie of the Year honors from the Newspaper Enterprise Association and the first of four career Pro Bowl selections. A 1973 trade sent him to the Baltimore Colts, where he spent five seasons before returning to Oakland. He was a member of the Raiders' 1980 Super Bowl championship team and retired from the NFL following the 1981 season. After a year away from the game, he played a single season in 1983 for the Oakland Invaders of the USFL.
