Red Berenson

Gordon Arthur "Red" Berenson, born December 8, 1939, is a Canadian former professional ice hockey centre and head coach who later led the University of Michigan Wolverines men's ice hockey team from 1984 to 2017. He played junior hockey with the Regina Pats, taking part in two Memorial Cups, in 1956 and 1958. In 1959 he played for the world champion Belleville McFarlands. Berenson then attended the University of Michigan, graduating from its School of Business and playing collegiately for the Wolverines, where he earned All-American honors and led the NCAA with 43 goals in his final year.

He signed with the Montreal Canadiens and spent five years in their system, including membership on the Stanley Cup-winning squad of 1965, before being traded to the New York Rangers, where he played parts of two seasons without success. Seven weeks into the 1967–68 NHL season, the St. Louis Blues acquired Berenson and Barclay Plager from the Rangers, and it was with the Blues that he established himself among the new Western Division's leading players.

A world champion and Stanley Cup champion as a player, Berenson was inducted into Canada's Sports Hall of Fame in 2005 and the United States Hockey Hall of Fame in 2018.
