Dossier

Leonard Patrick "Red" Kelly (July 9, 1927 – May 2, 2019) was a Canadian professional hockey player and coach, born in Simcoe, Ontario, to Lawrence Daniel and Mary Frances Kelly. Over his playing career he won eight Stanley Cups, four with the Detroit Red Wings and four with the Toronto Maple Leafs—more than any other player who never played for the Montreal Canadiens. He was one of only two players who never played for the Canadiens yet was part of two of the nine dynasties recognized by the NHL. While still playing for the Maple Leafs, Kelly served as a Liberal Member of Parliament for the Toronto-area York West electoral district from 1962 to 1965, winning two more Stanley Cups during that period. In 1967 he retired as a player to become head coach of the expansion Los Angeles Kings. He went on to coach for another ten years in the NHL, including a stint in Pittsburgh, before finishing with the Maple Leafs in June 1977. In 2017, Kelly was named one of the "100 Greatest NHL Players" in history.
