Red Sullivan

George James "Red" Sullivan (December 24, 1929 – January 19, 2019) was a Canadian professional ice hockey player who competed in the National Hockey League from 1949 to 1961. He began his NHL career with the Boston Bruins, playing there from 1949 to 1953, before moving to the Chicago Black Hawks from 1954 to 1956. Sullivan led the Black Hawks in scoring during both of his seasons in Chicago, after which he was traded to the New York Rangers prior to the start of the 1956–57 season. He played for the Rangers from 1956 to 1961.

Sullivan was named captain of the New York Rangers for the 1957–58 season and held that position through the 1960–61 campaign, his final year as an NHL player. He appeared in the NHL All-Star Game five times, in 1955, 1956, 1958, 1959, and 1960.

On November 26, 1956, Sullivan was severely injured and very nearly killed when Montreal Canadiens defenceman Doug Harvey speared him in the stomach, rupturing his spleen. A Catholic priest was brought to the hospital to deliver his last rites, but Sullivan survived and resumed his career. Following his playing days, he became a coach, serving in that capacity between 1962 and 1975.
