Rick Monday

Robert James "Rick" Monday Jr. (born November 20, 1945) is an American former professional baseball center fielder who played in Major League Baseball from 1966 to 1984. Born in Batesville, Arkansas, Monday earned league honors in baseball at Santa Monica High School in Southern California. After graduating, he weighed a college scholarship against professional baseball; Tommy Lasorda offered him a $20,000 signing bonus.

Monday holds the distinction of being the first player selected in the inaugural 1965 Major League Baseball draft. Over 19 seasons he played for the Kansas City/Oakland Athletics (1966–71), the Chicago Cubs (1972–76) and the Los Angeles Dodgers (1977–84). A two-time All-Star, he won a World Series championship with the Dodgers in 1981.

He also received attention for a 1976 incident in which he prevented the American flag from being burned on the field at Dodger Stadium. After his playing career, Monday went on to serve as a Dodgers broadcaster on both television and radio.
