Dossier

Richard Allan Smith (born June 29, 1948) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player who competed in the National Hockey League (NHL) and the World Hockey Association (WHA) from 1968 until 1981. After three seasons with the Hamilton Red Wings, he was drafted by the Boston Bruins in the second round, seventh overall, in the 1966 NHL Amateur Draft. He played for Boston from 1968–69 through 1971–72, winning the Stanley Cup with the Bruins in 1970. In February 1972, Boston traded Smith, along with Reggie Leach and Bob Stewart, to the California Golden Seals for Carol Vadnais and Don O'Donoghue. He remained with the Golden Seals through the 1972–73 season, after which he left the NHL for the WHA to play for the Minnesota Fighting Saints. Smith returned to the NHL in 1975–76 with the St. Louis Blues, staying until the 1976–77 season, when he rejoined the Boston Bruins. In 1980 he left Boston for one final NHL season, split between the Detroit Red Wings, for whom he appeared in 11 games, and the Washington Capitals, for whom he played 40 games.
