Roger Metzger

Roger Henry Metzger (born October 10, 1947) was a Major League Baseball shortstop who played primarily for the Houston Astros from 1971 to 1978, with brief stints for the Chicago Cubs (1970) and San Francisco Giants (1978–1980). A first-round pick (16th overall) in the 1969 draft, Metzger was valued for his defense and speed rather than his bat. He won the 1973 Gold Glove Award — the first ever for an Astros shortstop — and led the National League in triples in both 1971 and 1973. He retired at 32 following a 1979 table-saw accident that cost him the tips of four fingers on his right hand.
