Dossier

Roger Thorpe Peckinpaugh (February 5, 1891 – November 17, 1977) was an American professional baseball shortstop and manager who played in Major League Baseball from 1910 through 1927. Discovered as a high school student by Nap Lajoie, who signed him to his first professional contract, Peckinpaugh debuted with the Cleveland Naps. Cleveland traded him to the New York Yankees in 1913. He managed the Yankees for 20 games in 1914, becoming the youngest manager in MLB history, and served as team captain for the remainder of his tenure with the club. The Washington Senators later acquired him, and he played there until his final season, which he spent with the Chicago White Sox.

Regarded as an excellent defensive shortstop and a strong leader, Peckinpaugh was named American League Most Valuable Player in 1925. He appeared in the World Series three times. Over his career he played for the Cleveland Naps, New York Yankees, Washington Senators, and Chicago White Sox.

After his playing days, Peckinpaugh managed the Cleveland Indians from 1928 through 1933 and again in 1941. He also worked as a minor league baseball manager and served in the front office of the Indians and the Buffalo Bisons from 1942 through 1947.
