Ron Santo

Ronald Edward Santo (February 25, 1940 – December 3, 2010) was an American Major League Baseball third baseman who played for the Chicago Cubs from 1960 through 1973 and the Chicago White Sox in 1974. Over his 15-year career he was selected as an All-Star for nine seasons. He led the National League in triples once, in walks four times, and in on-base percentage twice. Santo batted .300 or better four times and hit 30 or more home runs four times, and he is the only third baseman in major-league history to record eight consecutive seasons with more than 90 runs batted in, from 1963 through 1970.

Santo was also a defensive standout, winning the Gold Glove Award for five consecutive seasons. He led the National League in total chances eight times; in games, putouts, and assists seven times each; and in double plays six times. From 1966 to 1974 he held the National League record for assists in a single season, and he set NL career records for assists (4,532) and total chances (6,777).

In 1990, Santo joined the Cubs broadcasting team, providing commentary for Cubs games on WGN radio, a position he held until his death in 2010. He was named to the Cubs All-Century Team in 1999. Santo was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2012.
