Roy Gerela

Carl Roy Gerela (born April 2, 1948) is a Canadian former professional football player who served as a placekicker in the American Football League and the National Football League. He graduated from Kalani High School in Honolulu and played college football for the New Mexico State Aggies. Houston selected him in the fourth round of the 1969 NFL/AFL draft, and he kicked for the Oilers in the AFL in 1969 and through their first NFL season in 1970.

Gerela signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers before the 1971 season and became popular with the team's fans, who formed a club known as "Gerela's Gorillas." He led the AFC in scoring in 1973 and 1974 and earned Pro Bowl selection in 1972 and 1974. He was a member of the Steelers' Super Bowl championship teams following the 1974, 1975, and 1978 seasons. Upon retiring, he held the record for most missed extra points in postseason history with six, a mark Jake Elliott matched in 2026.

Pittsburgh released Gerela before the 1979 season in favor of rookie Matt Bahr. He appeared in three games for the San Diego Chargers in 1979 before a torn groin muscle ended his career.
