Dossier

Roy David McMillan (July 17, 1929 – November 2, 1997) was an American professional baseball player, coach, and manager who played as a shortstop in Major League Baseball from 1951 to 1966. He was most prominently a member of the Cincinnati Reds, serving as the club's starting shortstop for nine seasons.

McMillan was born in Bonham, Texas, and attended Bonham High School, where he was a member of the football, basketball, tennis, and track and field teams. Because his high school did not field a baseball team, he played third base on the town softball team. He later attended Texas A&M University for one semester.

A two-time All-Star, McMillan was among the top defensive shortstops of his era and was nicknamed "Mr. Shortstop" for his fielding. He won three Gold Glove Awards during his tenure with the Reds and teamed with second baseman Johnny Temple to form one of the best double-play combinations of the 1950s. He also played for the Milwaukee Braves and the New York Mets.

Following his retirement as a player, McMillan managed both the Brewers and the Mets. He was inducted into the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame in 1971.
