Dossier

Roy Edward Sievers (November 18, 1926 – April 3, 2017) was an American professional baseball player who appeared in Major League Baseball as a first baseman and left fielder from 1949 through 1965. He batted and threw right-handed.

Sievers was born in St. Louis, Missouri, and raised there with his two brothers; his father worked for an iron supply company. He grew up three blocks from Sportsman's Park, the home of both the St. Louis Cardinals and the St. Louis Browns. He attended Beaumont High School, where coach Ray Elliott taught him to hit with power. Three of his high school teammates went on to play in the major leagues, and Earl Weaver, a contemporaneous Beaumont junior varsity player, became a Hall of Fame manager. As a schoolboy basketball star, Sievers was nicknamed "Squirrel."

He broke in with the St. Louis Browns and was named the first American League Rookie of the Year in 1949. Over his career he also played for the Washington Senators, the Chicago White Sox, the Philadelphia Phillies, and the expansion Washington Senators. In 1957 he led the American League in home runs and won the RBI crown. A five-time All-Star, Sievers played his final major league season in 1965.
