Sam Etcheverry (May 20, 1930 – August 29, 2009), nicknamed "the Rifle," was a quarterback who played professional American and Canadian football. The son of Basque sheep farmers from New Mexico, Etcheverry played college football at the University of Denver from 1949 to 1951, where he still holds most program passing records. He spent the bulk of his professional career with the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League, earning the CFL's Most Outstanding Player award in 1954. His jersey number 92 is retired by the Alouettes. He is a member of the Canadian Football Hall of Fame and was ranked 26th on TSN's list of the CFL's Top 50 players of the modern era in 2006.
