Sammy Baugh

Samuel Adrian Baugh (March 17, 1914 – December 17, 2008) was an American professional football quarterback who played 16 seasons with the Washington Redskins of the National Football League. Born March 17, 1914, in Temple, Texas, he was the second son of James Baugh, a Santa Fe Railroad worker, and Lucy Baugh. He played college football for the TCU Horned Frogs, earning All-American honors twice before the Redskins selected him in the first round of the 1937 NFL draft.

In addition to quarterback, Baugh played safety on defense and served as the team's punter. With Washington he won NFL Championships in 1937 and 1942, led the league in completion percentage eight times, in passing yards four times, and in passing touchdowns twice. He also led the NFL in punting average five times and in defensive interceptions, recording 11 in 1943.

After his playing career, Baugh coached the Hardin–Simmons Cowboys at the college level before coaching professionally for the New York Titans and the Houston Oilers. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1963 and was later named to the NFL's 75th and 100th Anniversary All-Time teams. He died December 17, 2008.
