Sammy White

Sammy Charles White (July 7, 1927 – August 4, 1991) was an American Major League Baseball catcher who played for the Boston Red Sox (1951–59), Milwaukee Braves (1961), and Philadelphia Phillies (1962). Born in Wenatchee, Washington, White was an All-American college basketball player at the University of Washington before signing with the Seattle Rainiers in 1949. A right-handed batter, he earned an All-Star selection in 1953 and was valued for his defensive work behind the plate, including a strong arm and his handling of the Red Sox pitching staff. On June 11, 1952, he hit a walk-off grand slam off Satchel Paige in the ninth inning.
