Serge Savard

Serge Aubrey Savard, born January 22, 1946, is a Canadian former professional ice hockey defenceman who played most prominently with the Montreal Canadiens of the National Hockey League. He played minor league hockey with the Montreal Junior Canadiens and the Omaha Knights before making his NHL debut with Montreal in 1966–67. In 1968–69, his second full NHL season, he won the Conn Smythe Trophy as the most valuable player of the playoffs, becoming the first defenceman to do so. His early career was marked by two broken legs, suffered in 1970 and 1971. Over fifteen seasons with the Canadiens, Savard played on seven Stanley Cup championship teams — in 1967–68, 1968–69, 1972–73, 1975–76, 1976–77, 1977–78, and 1978–79 — the most by any defenceman; Montreal also won the Cup in 1970–71, but he did not play in those playoffs because of a broken leg, his second in two years. In 1978–79 he won the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy. After his playing days, Savard served the Canadiens as general manager and as Senior Vice President of Hockey Operations, and he became a businessman in Montreal, where he is nicknamed "The Senator." In 2017 he was named one of the 100 Greatest NHL Players in history.
