Dossier

Sherrill Headrick (March 13, 1937 – September 10, 2008) was an American professional football player who played linebacker in the American Football League. Headrick grew up in Fort Worth, Texas, where he was an All-District fullback at North Side High School. He played college football at Texas Christian University as an offensive guard, but dropped out after his junior season due to poor grades. He then spent one year in the Canadian Football League.

While working in the west Texas and New Mexico oil fields during the off-season, Headrick signed with the Dallas Texans in 1960 as an undrafted free agent, becoming one of the first players to join the team. He played linebacker and starred for the franchise both as the Texans and after they became the Kansas City Chiefs. In his first year, he set the standard for playing hurt: he fractured a vertebra in his neck during a pre-game collision at Houston and played the entire game despite the pain. He learned of the fracture five days later but played the following week, earning the nickname "Psycho."
