Shoeless Joe Jackson

Joseph Jefferson Jackson (1887–1951), nicknamed "Shoeless Joe," was a professional baseball outfielder who played in Major League Baseball in the early 20th century. His .356 career batting average ranks among the highest in major-league history. Jackson played for three MLB teams before his career was cut short by the Black Sox Scandal, in which eight members of the 1919 Chicago White Sox conspired to fix the World Series. Despite leading both teams in several statistical categories during that Series and setting a record with 12 base hits, Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis permanently banned Jackson from professional baseball after the 1920 season. In 2025, Commissioner Rob Manfred removed Jackson from MLB's permanently ineligible list.
