Sidney Wicks

Sidney Wicks (born September 19, 1949) is an American former professional basketball player in the National Basketball Association. A native of Contra Costa County, California, he attended Alexander Hamilton High School in Los Angeles. Because of non-qualifying high school grades, Wicks spent a year at Santa Monica College before enrolling at the University of California, Los Angeles. A 6'8" power forward and center, he played college basketball for the UCLA Bruins, appearing on three straight NCAA Division I championship teams from 1969 to 1971 and serving as the Bruins' star player on the latter two title squads. He earned Academic All-America honors in 1971 and graduated with a degree in sociology.

The Portland Trail Blazers selected Wicks with the second overall pick in the 1971 NBA draft. He was named NBA Rookie of the Year and went on to become a four-time NBA All-Star during his tenure with the Trail Blazers. He later played for the Boston Celtics and the San Diego Clippers, and finished his professional career after one season in Italy.
