Sonny Randle

Ulmo Shannon "Sonny" Randle Jr. (January 6, 1936 – May 23, 2017) was an American football player, coach, and sportscaster who played wide receiver in the National Football League. He was the son of Ulmo Shannon Randle Sr., a real estate heir, and Lillian Arliser Dixon, and had a younger brother, David. Randle attended Fork Union Military Academy through his elementary and high school years, where he concentrated on track and field. In 1954 he ran the 100-yard dash in 9.8 seconds, setting a school record that stood until 1982, earning All-American honors and an invitation to the U.S. Olympic trials.

Randle played college football at the University of Virginia. In the NFL he played for the Chicago Cardinals, which became the St. Louis Cardinals, as well as the San Francisco 49ers and the Dallas Cowboys. Beyond his playing career, he worked as a coach and as a sportscaster. He died on May 23, 2017.
