Dossier

Carl Ford "Spider" Lockhart (April 6, 1943 – July 9, 1986) was an American professional football player who played safety for the New York Giants of the National Football League.

Lockhart was born in Dallas, Texas, and attended James Madison High School there before transferring to Hamilton Park High School in Richardson, Texas, after a United States Court of Appeals ruled that Dallas had to integrate its public schools. Black transfer students were barred from playing football in that first year of 1959, so Lockhart played basketball and ran track, becoming the state high hurdles champion. When he was permitted to play football the following year, he led the team to a state championship.

He attended North Texas State University (now the University of North Texas), where he played both running back and defensive back and led the Missouri Valley Conference in punt returns. The New York Giants selected him in the 13th round of the 1965 NFL draft.

Over his NFL career as a safety with the Giants, Lockhart earned two selections to the Pro Bowl. He died on July 9, 1986.
