Sprague Cleghorn

Henry William "Sprague" Cleghorn, also known as "Peg" and "The Big Train," was a Canadian professional ice hockey defenceman who lived from March 11, 1890, to July 12, 1956. Born in Westmount, Quebec, he played 17 professional seasons between 1911 and 1929. In the National Hockey Association he skated for the Renfrew Creamery Kings and the Montreal Wanderers, and after the league's formation he played in the National Hockey League for the Ottawa Senators, the Montreal Canadiens, and the Boston Bruins. He won three Stanley Cup championships, taking the title with the Senators in 1920 and 1921 and with the Canadiens in 1924. His brother Odie was also a professional player, and the two were teammates for several seasons.

A tough and physical defender, Cleghorn was known for violent play. He was twice charged with assault following on-ice incidents and was the subject of efforts to have him banned from the NHL. That reputation made him an effective defenceman, while his offensive skill established him as one of hockey's first offensive defencemen. At the time of his retirement, his 169 career goals were the second most in professional hockey history by a defenceman, trailing only Harry Cameron's 173. Cleghorn was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1958.
