Stan Jones

Stanley Paul Jones (November 24, 1931 – May 21, 2010) was an American professional football guard and defensive tackle. Born in Altoona, Pennsylvania, he grew up in the Harrisburg area after his father, a telephone company employee, was transferred there. He played high school football at Lemoyne High School in Lemoyne, Pennsylvania, before attending the University of Maryland, where he was a member of the Sigma Nu fraternity.

At Maryland, Jones played college football as a tackle and was a unanimous All-American selection in 1953. He competed on some of the program's most successful teams. In 1951, the Terrapins were co-champions of the Southern Conference with Virginia Military Institute. In 1953, by then competing in the Atlantic Coast Conference, Maryland shared the conference title with Duke University and was named national champion.

Jones played in the National Football League for the Chicago Bears and the Washington Redskins, lining up at both guard and defensive tackle. He is credited as the first professional player to use weight training to improve his conditioning for football.

Jones was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1991.
