Steve DeLong

Steven Cyril DeLong (July 3, 1943 – August 18, 2010) was an American professional football player who played defensive line in the American Football League and the National Football League. Born in Norfolk, Virginia, he attended Oscar F. Smith High School in Chesapeake, where he played tackle. As a senior in 1960, listed at 6 ft 2 in and 225 lb, he helped the team to a 7–3 finish and was selected All-Metropolitan and All-American; he had earlier been named All-Eastern District and All-State in both 1959 and 1960.

DeLong played collegiately for the Tennessee Volunteers, where he was a two-time All-American at middle guard. As a senior in 1964, he was awarded the Outland Trophy as the best interior lineman in college football. He was a first-round selection in both the AFL and NFL drafts in 1965.

Professionally, DeLong played for the San Diego Chargers and the Chicago Bears. In 1969 with San Diego, he set a team record with 17 sacks, a mark that stood until Gary Johnson recorded 17½ in 1980.

DeLong was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1993. He died on August 18, 2010.
