Dossier

Loren Everett "Steve" Owens, born December 9, 1947, is an American former professional football player who played running back for five seasons with the Detroit Lions of the National Football League. Born in Gore, Oklahoma, and raised in Miami, Oklahoma, Owens attended Miami High School, where he was a standout player for the Miami Wardogs. He played college football for the University of Oklahoma in Norman from 1967 to 1969. As a senior in 1969, he was recognized as a consensus first-team All-American and won the Heisman Trophy, becoming the second Oklahoma Sooner to receive the award, after Billy Vessels. The Lions selected him in the first round, 19th overall, of the 1970 NFL draft. He became the first Detroit Lion to rush for over 1,000 yards in a season. He was inducted into the Miami Wardogs Hall of Fame; a sculpture of him stands by the Wardogs football field, and the main east-west road connecting downtown Miami and Interstate 44 is named for him.
