Steve Spurrier played college football as a quarterback for the Florida Gators, winning the 1966 Heisman Trophy. The San Francisco 49ers drafted him in the first round of the 1967 NFL Draft, and he spent roughly a decade in the NFL primarily as a backup quarterback and punter. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame as a player in 1986. Spurrier later transitioned to coaching in 1978, working as a college assistant before becoming head coach of the Tampa Bay Bandits in the USFL in 1983, leading the team to two playoff appearances before the league folded in 1986.
