Dossier

Thomas Nicholas Meschery, born Tomislav Nikolayevich Meshcheryakov on October 26, 1938, is an American former professional basketball player who played power forward in the National Basketball Association from 1961 to 1971. Born in Harbin, Manchukuo, China, he was the son of Russian emigrants who had fled the October Revolution of 1917. During World War II, the family was relocated to a Japanese internment camp near Tokyo. After the war, Meschery and his parents emigrated to the United States, where his father renamed the family "Meschery" amid the anti-Soviet Red Scare of the McCarthy era.

Over a ten-year NBA career, Meschery played for the Philadelphia/San Francisco Warriors and the Seattle SuperSonics. He appeared in the 1963 NBA All-Star Game, becoming the first foreign-born player selected as an NBA All-Star. The Warriors retired his number 14 and, in a distinctive honor, incorporated the number into the team's logo from 1967 to 1974.
