Tom Reid

Thomas Allan Reid (born June 24, 1946) is a retired professional ice hockey player who appeared in 701 regular season games in the National Hockey League over an 11-year career. Born in Fort Erie, Ontario, he played as a defenseman for the Chicago Black Hawks and the Minnesota North Stars.

Reid was not known as a goal scorer, finishing his career with only 17 goals. His best-known accomplishment as a player came on October 14, 1971, when he scored a rare penalty shot goal against Ken Dryden of the Montreal Canadiens — the only penalty shot ever scored against Dryden.

Reid was forced to retire as an active player after the 1977–78 season due to a rash known among his colleagues as "the gunk," which covered 70 percent of his body. At its worst, the rash secreted a yellowish liquid that stuck to the uniform and protective equipment. He did not begin experiencing it until his eighth season in the league. His doctors advised him to end his career because the steroid and cortisone shots he had been taking would lead to fatal consequences. A similar skin disorder would abbreviate the career of Marián Hossa four decades later.
