Dossier

Tommy Joe Coffey (November 18, 1936 – August 25, 2020) was a Canadian-American professional football player who played end, wide receiver, and place kicker in the Canadian Football League. Over a fourteen-year career he suited up for the Edmonton Eskimos, Hamilton Tiger-Cats, and Toronto Argonauts, catching 650 passes for 10,320 yards and 63 touchdowns.

Coffey surpassed 1,000 receiving yards four times, in 1963, 1964, 1965, and 1969. His most prolific season came in 1965, when he recorded 81 receptions for 1,286 yards. His best touchdown totals were 11 in both 1962 and 1969, and his best scoring years were 1969 with 148 points and 1962 with 129. In his first two seasons he also played some defense, intercepting three passes in 1959 and one in 1960.

He was a member of two Grey Cup-winning teams with Hamilton, both against the Saskatchewan Roughriders, in 1967 and 1972. During the 1967 season he caught 42 passes for 683 yards, averaging 16.3 yards per catch, with 5 touchdowns, and connected on 18 of 27 field goal attempts for 107 points. He kicked in the 55th Grey Cup that year. After hitting only 11 of 27 field goal attempts in 1971, he was replaced as the Tiger-Cats' place kicker by Ian Sunter following that season.
