Dossier

Valere Ronald "Val" Fonteyne, born December 2, 1933, is a Canadian former professional ice hockey left winger who played from 1959 to 1974. He spent his National Hockey League career with the Detroit Red Wings, across two separate tours of duty, the New York Rangers and the Pittsburgh Penguins, before finishing in the World Hockey Association with the Alberta/Edmonton Oilers.

Though never an offensive star, Fonteyne was a hard-working and effective defensive forward, and is regarded as one of the cleanest players in NHL history. Over 820 NHL games spanning 13 seasons, he served a total of just 26 minutes in the penalty box. He went entirely unpenalized in five different seasons, including three consecutive years from 1965 to 1968. In a further 149 World Hockey Association games, he was assessed only two minor penalties, and across his entire professional career he received a single fighting penalty.

In the NHL, Fonteyne scored 75 goals and 154 assists for 229 points in 820 games. He added 3 goals and 10 assists in 59 playoff games. He reached the Stanley Cup finals with the Detroit Red Wings in 1961, 1963 and 1966, losing on each occasion.
