Verlon Biggs

Verlon Marion Biggs (March 16, 1943 – June 7, 1994) was an American professional football player who played defensive end in the American Football League and the National Football League. Born in Moss Point, Mississippi, one of nine children, he attended Magnolia High School, graduating in 1961.

Biggs played varsity football at Jackson State College from 1961 to 1964. The team won the Southwestern Athletic Conference championship in both 1961 and 1962. He was named All-SWAC in 1963 and 1964 and an NCAA All-American in those same two seasons.

A 6-foot-4, 270-pound defensive end, Biggs was selected by the New York Jets in the third round of the 1964 AFL draft, 20th overall. In that same draft the Jets used their first pick, second overall, on quarterback Joe Namath, and also selected 1964 Heisman Trophy winner John Huarte.

Over his career Biggs recorded more than 90 quarterback sacks. He made an important play for the New York Jets in their Super Bowl III victory.
