Dossier

Virgil Carter (born November 9, 1945) was a professional football quarterback who played in the NFL and WFL from 1967 through 1976. He attended Brigham Young University, where he became the first notable passing quarterback in the program's history, setting six national, 19 conference, and 24 school records while earning academic All-American honors. Carter helped lead BYU to the Western Athletic Conference championship in 1965, the first in program history. His success with the passing game at BYU influenced the program's subsequent identity as a producer of professional-caliber quarterbacks.
