Walter Joseph Schmidt (March 20, 1887 – July 4, 1973) was an American professional baseball catcher who played in the Major Leagues from 1916 to 1925. He spent the bulk of his career with the Pittsburgh Pirates before finishing with the St. Louis Cardinals. In 766 games over ten seasons, Schmidt posted a .257 batting average with 216 runs, 3 home runs, 234 RBI, 57 stolen bases, and a .980 fielding percentage. He later served as player-manager for the Mission Bells of the Pacific Coast League in 1926. His brother, Boss Schmidt, also played professional baseball; the two were known for their physical strength and toughness.
