Dossier

Wilfrid Paiement, Jr., born October 16, 1955, is a Canadian former professional ice hockey right wing who played in the National Hockey League from 1974 through 1988. Over his career he appeared for seven different NHL teams. He is the younger brother of former NHL player Rosaire Paiement.

Paiement was selected second overall in the first round of the 1974 NHL amateur draft by the Kansas City Scouts. He played two seasons in Kansas City before the franchise relocated to Colorado and became the Colorado Rockies.

In 1977, Paiement was a member of the Canadian team that returned to the World Championship in Austria after a seven-year absence. Frustrated by the team's lack of success during the tournament, several members of Team Canada, Paiement among them, resorted to violence. On April 22, Paiement attacked Swedish player Lars-Erik Ericsson, who received a stick in the eye, and also struck Russian player Sergei Babinov on the head with his stick after the score had reached 8-0 in an 11-1 Team Canada loss. Swedish player Lars-Gunnar Lundberg, who played for the Swedish national team in 1977, later described Paiement as the worst coward he ever saw on the ice.
