Dossier

Woodley Carl Lewis Jr. (June 14, 1925 – December 29, 2000) played end, wide receiver, and defensive back across 11 NFL seasons with the Los Angeles Rams, Chicago Cardinals, and Dallas Cowboys. He attended Manual Arts High School and Los Angeles City College before earning a scholarship to the University of Oregon, where he played alongside quarterback Norm Van Brocklin. In 1948, Oregon tied California for the Pacific Coast Conference title; Lewis played in that year's Cotton Bowl against Southern Methodist University, becoming the first African-American to play in Cotton Bowl Stadium. In 1949, he led the nation in kickoff returns.
