Elwood George English was born on March 2, 1906, in Licking County, Ohio, and played twelve seasons in Major League Baseball between 1927 and 1938. A shortstop and third baseman, English spent the bulk of his career with the Chicago Cubs before finishing with the Brooklyn Dodgers. He began his professional career in 1925 with the Toledo Mud Hens of the American Association, where he played shortstop at age 18. His uncle, Paul Carpenter, also played professional baseball. English died on September 26, 1997.
