Zack Wheat

Zachariah Davis Wheat (May 23, 1888 – March 11, 1972), nicknamed "Buck," was an American professional baseball player who played left field in Major League Baseball from 1909 to 1927. He spent the first 18 seasons of his career in Brooklyn, most notably with the Dodgers during the years the club was known as the Robins, before playing his final season with the Philadelphia Athletics.

Wheat began his career in the Dead Ball era but proved a consistent hitter, batting over .300 in 13 seasons and winning the National League batting championship in 1918. He finished with a .317 career batting average and remains the Dodgers' all-time franchise leader in games, at bats, plate appearances, hits, doubles, triples, and total bases. A stylish and graceful outfielder, he led National League left fielders in putouts seven times and in fielding percentage twice.

Born in Hamilton, Missouri, Wheat was the son of Basil and Julia Wheat. His brother, McKinley "Mack" Wheat, also reached the major leagues, and the two were teammates in Brooklyn for five seasons. Wheat was unanimously elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1959.
