Richard John Lucas (born April 15, 1938, in Glassport, Pennsylvania) was an American football quarterback. He played college football for the Penn State Nittany Lions, where he was a triple-threat player noted for his passing, running, punting, and defensive play, and was nicknamed "Riverboat Richie" for his play-calling. He won the Maxwell Award in 1959. Lucas was a first-round selection in both the 1960 NFL draft and the 1960 American Football League draft, and signed with the Buffalo Bills of the AFL, becoming the franchise's first player. He was acquired by the Denver Broncos in the 1962 equalization draft but never played for them. After his professional career he returned to Penn State, serving as assistant athletic director until 1998. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1986.
