A Tennessee native who attended the University of Tennessee, Bridges relied on an outstanding curveball to anchor Detroit's pitching staff through the 1930s, winning 20 games in three consecutive seasons. He contributed two victories in the 1935 World Series, helping the Tigers claim their first championship.
